Women played different roles during the Ming dynasty compared to other dynasties. The representations of women were also different from other dynasties. The Ming dynasty portrayed different perception towards women. Women had the role of contributing to familys success by getting married. Being married, they were expected to take care of their family. This was ensured by through good education. Marriage was used as a source of wealth as well as for prestige. This provoked marriage to be used for transaction and made Chinese daughters to be more marketable. It was believed that, educated women were behind the success of a family by showing light to family kids. Women exchanged ideas through social forums. They remained loyal to their husband despite of being household head. Women were expected to obey their husbands, sons and fathers. The restrictions laid to women did not intrude to their private life. It only deterred them from public life (Wang, 20).
Women were expected to work hard to make ends meet. They participated in carrying out the various domestic tasks such as weaving, milking, and spinning amongst other tasks. There were also representations of women in some fields such as art and music. There were exceptions of women from higher social classes. Women in these classes were expected to marry on top of managing their households. Other roles included supervision of servants. They were also concerned with the success of their kids in terms of education. Those women in the upper classes were highly educated (Wang, 47). Some women in these classes were poets and others were scholars.
The political power of women was witnessed in their households. There are some women who managed to influence the throne although it was not expected. During the Ming dynasty, families were ranked based on power and wealth. Rich women were allowed to be the overall in their households.
