How does Chinas population grow

The growth of Chinas population changed from being a steady increase to a nearly exponential rate in the course of one century. The population of China dramatically increased between the mid-17th century and the mid-18th century, doubling in size and reaching its peak percentage relative to the entire worlds population going from 22.4 to more than a third, 35.8. This exponential trend then maintained for another decade as the population again nearly doubled in the mid-19th century. With this alarming trend and its negative effects on the country, measures were taken and the population increase again drastically slowed until it was down to 22.1 of the worlds total population in the mid-20th century. The Chinese population growth then became nearly steady, although still slightly higher than the worlds population growth, as data from the next few centuries until the last data point (1996) showed the population at around 21-22 of the total population.

2. What are Chinas developmental strategies

Overwhelmed by the increasing population problems and consequent economic issues, China began an economic reform with two strategic goals in the 1970s. These goals were to quadruple its Gross National Product (GNP) and to limit its population growth to within 1.2 billion during the last two decades of the twentieth century.  These goals recognized the direct effect the tremendous population had on the social and economic development of the country.

3. What is the relationship between Chinas economic development and social development

China recognized that the glaring social development issue, tremendous population growth, had consequent detrimental effects on its economic development. In the centuries of highest growth the population heavily strained the countrys resources creating problems and shortages with food, housing, education, and employment. With a large number of people hungry, homeless, uneducated and unemployed this peak coincided with turmoil, foreign invasions, uprising and civil wars plaguing the country.

4. What are the world responses to Chinas population control

There were conflicting responses to the population control policies China implemented which were admittedly drastic measures for a drastic situation. Although awards and praise were given at the efficiency of these methods, resulting in the large percentage decrease from 1850 and 1950 and onwards, there were as many objections to them. Though the methods were no doubt effective and swiftly implemented, a fact much commended by scholars and politicians, the religious and human rights groups of the Western world criticized the policies calling measures like abortion murder and labelling others inhumane, coercive, or inappropriate.

5. What are the limitations of current study of Chinas population

The main limitation is that the population analysis is simplified into a statistical problem, only dealing with the numbers and figures without considering the history and the cultural climate leading to these numbers. A thorough study of a population cannot separate the peoples culture, history, and ideologies from its social and economic development. Another limitation is the lack of objectivity in the conduction of the study, such as regarding the population control measures implemented with biases already in place and not seeing them as the people, who thought that the conditions were drastic enough that these measures needed to be implemented, saw them.
